Tazkiyah linguistically is related to cleansing, purifying and growing. It is the process of cleansing the Nafs (self/ego) from its base and lower qualities, and replacing them with beautiful and spiritually higher qualities.
Tazkiyah aims to purify the heart from spiritual ailments, from the darkness of sins and from
unhealthy attachments to the elements of Dunyāa’ (life of this world).
Is tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the self) obligatory? YES.
Allah, in His Wisdom, repeats many important concepts in the Holy Qur’an.
One such is the concept of tazkiyah which is repeated multiple times in Makkan and Madinan surahs. We learn and understand that all of the Qur’ān and Sunnah i.e. the Sharia, is about tazkiyah, so that we arrive at Allah’s divine presence on the Day of Judgement with cleansed hearts worthy of standing in His presence and company.
