16,000 Receive Indonesia Emergency Aid

More than 16,000 people affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami which struck Indonesia have received emergency aid provisions thanks to Islamic Help’s supporters. Emergency food packs were provided to thousands of families in a series of distributions by Islamic Help and its partners.

It was part of our emergency response after the magnitude 7.5 quake that was followed by a tsunami struck the Central Sulawesi region of Indonesia at the end of last month. More than 200,000 people died and 75,000 were displaced in the twin-tragedy.

Islamic Help launched an emergency appeal which included live television appeals on Islam Channel and fundraising events. The emergency aid was part of a 1,000-tonnes consignment that was shipped to Sulawesi.

The first major distribution of family food packs saw the provision of 2,333 family food packs and 6,000 cooked meals to beneficiaries. This was followed by a series of distributions in the following days in villages across the Banawa region in central Sulawesi.

The emergency food deliveries were carried out with a series of partners, including Indonesia’s Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT) and from the UK the Blackburn UK Trust, LIA Relief Trust, Masjid Al Falaah and Superhands. Further emergency aid deliveries are planned with the provision of family tents, survival packs which include hygiene kits, and medical aid.

ALUN

Alun is one of the thousands internally displaced people in Banawa, Donggala, Central Sulawesi.

While worried because now he is jobless - the factory where he used to work was destroyed – he is nonetheless thankful that he, his wife and 4 children survived.

“Why should I be sad? I lost my job but I am lucky compared to most of my neighbours. They lost someone they love."

MRS ROSBIA

Mrs. Rosbia was among the fortunate – she did not lose any relatives in the disaster. Not her children, her husband or a relative.

However, she did suffer the loss of something precious to her - her life-long house she built from scratch. Saddest of all to her was that the kitchen was destroyed.

"The kitchen is my favourite place in my home. It is my duty to make sure my children's bellies are always full. I won’t let this earthquake make my children go hungry. I can borrow a kitchen from my neighbours and with this I am going to fulfil my duty."

Thank you to everyone for your generosity and please keep supporting this vital work. Donate to our Indonesia Emergency Appeal by calling 0121 446 5682 or go here.
