Haiti Earthquake

Islamic Help has launched an emergency appeal for Haiti after a major earthquake struck across the capital Port-au-Prince. Thousands are feared dead and people beyond count have been left homeless. According to some reports at least 3 million people are affected directly because of the earthquake. “I believe hundred thousand people have died but this figure may increase,” said the Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.

The earthquake measuring 7.0 on Richter Scale struck 15 km from the capital at 5 pm on 12^th January. With Haiti being one of the very poorest countries in the world, the government will face a tough task sheltering and providing food and clean water for the homeless.

It is still unclear as to the scale of disaster since all the communications are down across the country but it is believed that many homes, government buildings, hotels and schools have clasped and people are stuck under the rubble. The hospitals have been overwhelmed with the large number of injured people and there is shortage of medical supplies and basic necessities.

Islamic Help will work swiftly with inland partners and provide immediate first aid, food and shelter.
