A horrific earthquake with magnitude of 7.6 struck the Indonesian island Sumatra on 30th September. Due to its magnitude, the earthquake could be felt hundreds of miles away in the capital, Jakarta.
The death toll has already exceeded 1000 and experts say it will continue to rise. The deadly earthquake has also affected thousands of people by destroying; homes, schools, bridges, buildings and a hospital in the city of Padang. Due to a landslide, power and telecommunications have been cut, plunging the city into darkness.
Islamic Help are launching an emergency appeal to reach out to those affected and provide them with sheets of tarpaulins for emergency shelter, hygiene kits and clothing. Having worked in the region before after the tsunami in 2005, Islamic Help already have volunteers on the ground and have an added advantage of knowing the terrain well.
Islamic Help Chairman, Masood Alam Khan said, “It is very unfortunate that a region we worked so hard to rebuild after the 2005 Tsunami has again been devastated by such powerful tremors. Many victims are still trapped in buildings and we pray they will be reached in time. Alhamdullilah, our volunteers are on the ground and we will do all we can to reach those in need.”
